GAO is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the voting membership; i.e. those members who have paid an annual membership fee.
- The Board has an authorized strength of eleven members who are elected for a term of two years, with at least one-half of the Board being elected each year.
- The Board may also appoint individuals to serve on the Board of Directors in advisory capacities. These advisory directors may be invited to attend and participate in meetings and deliberations of the Board of Directors, but they are not entitled to vote on agenda items.
- New Board members are elected in November, and the newly elected Board then meets prior to January 1 to elect from among themselves a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer who serve the following year.
- Officers serve a one-year term and are elected/re-elected each year.
